Journal write (Rebus puzzles), then I showed you this video which was super-interesting and informative:​​

I really do love the message of the video, that if you want people to be interested in reading, then you have to let them choose books they're interested in reading.  That's exactly why we do Independent Reading Time, and why I challenged you to read 30 books this year—more minutes reading!

After that, appropriately enough, you read.  After that, I showed you the following video so we could do some more practice with identifying theme.  Your job was to do more of what we did last time, starting with identifying potential topics while you watch (in your notebook.) 

Then we did the same with this one:​

Next, you pick one of your topics, and ask "So what about it?  What's the (universal) message about this topic?  That's your theme.
